Paediatric Surgery is the subspeciality in surgery involved exclusively in the surgical care of neonates, infants, children, and adolescents. The term ‘Paediatric Surgery’ in the context of this prospectus includes Paediatric Urology. A major portion of work involves managing congenital anomalies. Childhood cancer, trauma, and other acquired conditions, some unique to children and adolescents constitute the rest. Currently, children up to the age of fourteen who present with general surgical or urological conditions are managed by the Pediatric Surgeonsin Sri Lanka. Some children are followed up and managed even beyond that age, whose primary problem or the management requires long-term follow-up into adulthood. Such transitional care ensures that
they have a smooth transition from Paediatric to Adult surgical services for continuation of care and follow-up.

A pre-MD surgical trainee is only briefly exposed to Paediatric Surgery as a part of their structured training. During this period, a trainee may get hands-on experience in some basic procedures. However, managing the standard workload of general surgical and urological problems in neonates and children needs more comprehensive training. The post-MD training program in pediatric surgery aims to develop a trainee to the level of a specialist who is competent to manage an unselected case, independently and successfully to the extent determined by the expected competencies of a day one surgeon.

  1. Gain an in-depth theoretical knowledge of surgical (including urological) illnesses and their management in neonates and older children.
  2. Develop excellent clinical competence in diagnosing the said conditions and make decisions on the management and follow up including transitional care.
  3. Acquire operative competence to deal with the said conditions, safely and successfully.
  4. Gain skills in communication and interaction with the young patient and parent / guardian.

A candidate who fulfills the following requirements is eligible to be enrolled into the program.
a) Passed the MD (Surgery) Examination
b) Has not applied or has not already enrolled into any other post MD training program at the PGIM.
c) Has not obtained Board Certification in any field.
