The Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM) of the University of Colombo is the national apex body responsible for postgraduate medical education and Board Certification of medical specialists in Sri Lanka.
Following successful completion of MD examination, PG trainees are required to complete a mandatory period of training, overseas in a  recognized institution/unit to be eligible for Board Certification. The minimum period of overseas training is stipulated in the relevant prospectus. It will be the responsibility of the trainee to obtain the required leave and the scholarship if required from the employer.
There are three categories of training schemes awarded to PG trainees by foreign institutions.

1.Non-Salaried

The financial assistance granted under the scholarship scheme consists of ;
  1. Return passage for travel; the lowest economy air fare to the country of destination
  2. Personal maintenance allowance will be provided as stipulated in the circular attached ( Click here for living allowance circular).
  3. General Medical Council registration fee, if required
  4. Healthcare insurance/medical indemnity insurance/immigration health surcharge, if required
  5. Reimbursement of visa fee, embarkation fee on departure and departure/ arrival fees, subject to submission of receipts
  6. Book allowance of US$1,000 subject to submission of documents. (originals of the receipt/s from the book sellers and the recommendation of the supervising consultant must be forwarded). This allowance can be used to purchase laptops, computers, CDs and/ or books locally or abroad.
Following approval from the Board of Study, PGIM will recommend study leave and scholarship to the Ministry of Health. Please note that PGIM will acquire the verification of the non-salaried training scheme offered from the relevant foreign training institutions

2.Full Salaried

Full salary is offered by the relevant foreign training centre, therefore, no onthly living allowance or benefits are offered by the MOH or PGIM.
Following approval from the Board of Study, PGIM will recommend study leave to the Ministry of Health.

3.Part Salaried (partly funded)

Part of salary/funding is paid by the foreign institute and Ministry of Health/PGIM will pay only the balance of the salary offered by the foreign institute OR the full monthly allowance whichever less.
