This fulltime training programme of the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine of the University of Colombo will lead to the degree of MD (Family Medicine) to be awarded by the University of Colombo. This programme was started in 2000 and has undergone several revisions. This revision is focused on starting the stand-alone MD Family Medicine programme according to the needs of the country with the primary care reforms.
The successful completion of MD in Family Medicine training programme will entitle the trainee to be eligible for Certification as a Specialist in Family Medicine by the Board of Management on the recommendation of the Board of Study in Family Medicine.
To produce a postgraduate with required knowledge, skills and attitudes to function as a specialist in the field of Family Medicine to provide patient care in primary care settings of state and non-state institutions, taking into account the epidemiological and demographic transition in the country and the ongoing primary care reforms. The overall aim of the program is to produce an independently functioning specialist in Family Medicine in Sri Lanka. In a world that is increasingly providing fragmented care, Family Physicians are primary care specialists that are dedicated to treat the whole person, based on a unique ongoing patient-physician relationship. Family Physicians will play a unique role in the ongoing primary care strengthening reforms in Sri Lanka to provide high quality primary care services to every Sri Lankan citizen irrespective of age, gender, presenting complaints.
To be eligible to sit for the Selection Examination and to be selected for admission, a candidate should fulfill the following criteria:
- Hold a medical degree registered with the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) 2. Satisfactory completion of internship acceptable to the SLMC
- Satisfactory completion of one year of post internship in a university /public /private sector institution in Sri Lanka acceptable to the PGIM
- The criteria prescribed in 1 to 3 must have been satisfied by the applicants as at the date of closure of applications.
Those who fulfill the above criteria should be successful at the selection examination in order to enter the in-service training programme.
