The physiological basis of disease processes is fundamental to the understanding of the pathogenesis and the basis of examination, investigation and management of patients. It is said that the “physiology of today is the medicine of tomorrow.” Therefore, fundamental understanding of human physiology is essential for proper understanding of disease processes. This is an essential component of many postgraduate medical courses. This course is offered by the postgraduate Institiue of medicine (PGIM) with contributions from teachers of the faculties of medicine and dental sciences of the major universities in Sri Lan ka, involved in teach ing at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and external resource persons of specialized areas in physiology. Practical components of the programme will be conducted at the departments of physiology in the faculties of medicine and clinical attachments will be conducted in designated hospitals/clinics recognized by the PGIM, which have the capacity to offer facilities for such a programme. Therefore, adequateresource persons, laboratory capacities and library resources are available for the students who undertake this programme.

  1. To update knowledge, skills and research interests with recent advancements in the field of medical physiology.
  2. To enable application of physiological principles in medical practice with necessary skills, attitudes and professionalism.

Prospective applicants must satisfy the following requirements:

(a) A medical degree registered with the Sri Lanka Medical Council.

(b) Satisfactory completion of internship acceptable to the Sri Lanka Medical Council.

(b) Satisfactory completion of one year of post internship in medical/ clinical practice or teaching in a university /public /private sector institution in Sri Lanka acceptable to the PGIM.

(d) The criteria prescribed in paragraphs (a) to (c) must have been satisfied by the applicants at the date of closure of applications.

Or

(e) A dental /veterinary degree with three years work experience in the health sector or in a recognized university following graduation.

Or

(f) Allied health science graduates with at least three years of work experience in the health sector or in a recognized university following graduation.

And

(g) Comply with any other PGIM general regulations relevant to selection of trainees.
